Small SUVs might be the fastest-growing vehicle market, but like nearly 300,000 buyers in America last year, you may be looking for something bigger. Perhaps you need more cargo space or need to tow large loads but can't sacrifice seating. For whatever reason, you have decided to buy a large SUV, but which one? Most will choose either a Chevrolet Suburban or GMC Yukon XL. Both offer the power and seating that only a large SUV can with similar options. A comparison of key features may help you decide which vehicle is the right one for you.

The Interior of the 2016 Chevrolet Suburban

Interior Features Compared

The interior of the 2016 Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL are nearly identical. Both feature the same luxurious leather and elegant trim, cut and assembled in the same style. Both have the ability to seat up to nine passengers and feature a flat-fold third row, with an option for power folding. The biggest difference in the interior of the two SUVs is the backlighting. The Suburban uses a soft blue color that is easy on the eyes while the Yukon’s red lighting can be a bit jarring. Offerings for interior color differ as well. Suburban buyers can choose between jet black, dune, mahogany, and dark ash leather. The Yukon offers the same jet black and dune colors with additional options of shale (basically a slightly different shade of dune) and dark atmosphere, a darker tan color.

Exterior Features Compared

Both SUVs have a similar body, with only their different front ends to distinguish them. The Suburban features a sleek grille that extends into the headlights, giving it a striking upscale look. Small chrome touches peek out of the bottom of the front fender, adding to the bold design. The Yukon’s front end is short of spectacular with little to distinguish it from a low-end truck. The clear winner in exterior is the Suburban.

Safety Features Compared

The Suburban and Yukon XL boast the same positive results in all categories of crash testing. They also carry similar safety features such as back up cameras, lane change assist, and sensors to warn you if you’re getting close to another object. Both feature options for an enhanced security system as well. Once again, both vehicles are strikingly similar.

The Suburban is a noticeably more attractive and bolder looking version of the Yukon XL. The major differences between the two vehicles are the front end and interior lighting, with the Suburban edging out the Yukon is both areas. With this in mind, it’s hard to see how a $2-5k higher starting price for Yukon is worth it.
